Hydrogen Isotopic (d/h) Composition of Organic Matter during Diagenesis and Thermal Maturation

چکیده
Changes in the D/H ratio of sedimentary organic matter (SOM) during thermal maturation have been difficult to interpret because the effects of hydrogen exchange and kinetic fractionations are confounded in natural samples. Recent analytical developments have significantly improved our understanding of the responsible mechanisms. In this paper, we review experimental and field data that document a progressive increase in the D/H ratio of most organic hydrogen at the bulk and molecular levels, and suggest that the transfer of hydrogen from water to organic matter is the most important mechanism leading to those changes. SOM and water in natural petroleum systems approach a pseudoequilibrium D/H fractionation of about −80 to −110‰. D/H ratios of organic hydrogen can preserve quantitative information about paleoclimate throughout diagenesis, and some qualitative information through catagenesis. 501 A nn u. R ev . E ar th . Simplified batch equilibration for D/H determination of non-exchangeable hydrogen in solid organic material.
Hydrogen isotopic analysis of organic materials has been widely applied in studies of paleoclimate, animal migration, forensics, food and flavor authentication, and the origin and diagenesis of organic matter. Hydrogen bound to carbon (C-H) generally retains isotopic information about the water present during organic matter synthesis and associated biosynthetic fractionations, but hydrogen boun...
متن کاملFactors controlling the deuterium contents of sedimentary hydrocarbons
The hydrogen isotopic compositions of sedimentary hydrocarbon molecules are now being used to address a range of scientific questions, from paleoclimate to environmental reconstruction to understanding of petroleum systems. Here I review the environmental, biological, and physical/chemical factors that influence the H isotopic compositions of sedimentary hydrocarbons. A hierarchy of four main c...

Introduction: Hydrogen isotopic compositions in interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), in the form of D enrichments, provide unequivocal evidence for the survival of presolar organic matter (e.g., [1-4]). D/H enrichments of up to 50,000 o / oo have been reported from IDPs and such extreme values are presumably produced by ion-molecule reactions at 10-50 K in molecular clouds [1]. Although the ph...
متن کاملThe influence of organic matter on the boron isotope geochemistry of the gulf coast sedimentary basin, USA
Large variations in the boron isotopic composition of sedimentary environments make boron an attractive monitor of fluidrrock interactions during diagenesis. Studies of B in marine sediments have shown that preferential adsorption of B on clay minerals leaves pore waters enriched in B. During diagenesis, clay minerals recrystallize and incorporate B into Ž the mineral structure Spivack, A.J., P...
متن کاملThe deuterium/hydrogen distribution in chondritic organic matter attests to early ionizing irradiation
Primitive carbonaceous chondrites contain a large array of organic compounds dominated by insoluble organic matter (IOM). A striking feature of this IOM is the systematic enrichment in deuterium compared with the solar hydrogen reservoir. This enrichment has been taken as a sign of low-temperature ion-molecule or gas-grain reactions. However, the extent to which Solar System processes, especial...
